The Višňové Tunnel on Slovakia's D1 motorway will be temporarily closed in May 2026 for scheduled maintenance. The closure is expected to affect international freight transport, particularly on routes connecting Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary.

When will the Višňové Tunnel be closed?

Closure begins: Monday, 4 May 2026

  • 08:00 – Closure of the carriageway towards Košice
  • 19:00 – Closure of the carriageway towards Bratislava, resulting in a full tunnel closure

Scheduled reopening: 18 May 2026

The maintenance works are expected to last approximately 14 days.

Detour Route

During the closure, traffic will be diverted via:

  • Road I/18 through the Strečno Gorge (Strečno)

This will serve as the primary alternative route and is likely to experience significantly heavier traffic than usual.

What Does This Mean for Freight Transport?

The temporary closure of the Višňové Tunnel may result in:

  • Longer transit times
  • Increased traffic congestion along the detour route
  • Potential delays in deliveries

Transport operators are advised to incorporate the diversion into their route planning and delivery schedules to minimise disruptions.

Why Is the Višňové Tunnel So Important?

The Višňové Tunnel forms part of the D1 motorway, Slovakia's main east–west transport corridor and one of the country's most important logistics routes. Its temporary closure is expected to impact transit traffic across the wider Central and Eastern European region, making careful transport planning essential during the maintenance period.
