Since July 15, 2024, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency introduced new measures to protect animal health and prevent the spread of epizootic diseases. As a preventive disinfection measure, all truck drivers entering Bulgaria from Turkey will be required to disinfect their trailers at the border.
Reasons for introducing disinfection
The decision to introduce vehicle disinfection stems from concerns about public health and the safety of livestock in Bulgaria. The epizootic situation in Turkey, which includes the spread of infectious diseases among animals including, sheep and goat pox and “African swine fever,” have prompted the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency to take preventive measures. Disinfection of vehicles is aimed at preventing the introduction of diseases into Bulgaria, which is key to protecting the country’s livestock and agricultural sector.
Disinfection costs
According to the new regulations, vehicle disinfection is not a free service. Vehicle drivers will be required to pay a fee according to the following price list:
-
- Microbuses and light vans up to 3.5 tons: 5 euros (about 21.5 PLN)
- Trucks over 3.5 tons: 10 euros (about 43 PLN)
These fees are intended to cover the costs associated with the disinfection process and to ensure that the procedure is carried out effectively and in accordance with safety standards.
