In recent years, we have witnessed intense changes in global supply chains, that have significantly affected maritime transportation. One of the most noticeable effects of those changes is the increase in transshipment at seaports. The Port of Gdansk is not only the largest port in Poland, but also a strategic point on the map of Europe. Thanks to its location on the Baltic Sea, the port is a key transit hub and regional center for maritime trade, serving the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. It is also an integral part of the Baltic-Adriatic Transport Corridor (BALTAD).

Strategic location of the Port of Gdańsk

First and foremost, Gdansk port is a strategic gateway to Central and Eastern Europe. Its location allows for efficient connections with countries in Western Europe, Scandinavia, and even Asia. The proximity to TEN-T transport corridors ensures that goods can be swiftly and efficiently distributed to key locations across Europe, making Gdańsk an important hub in global supply chains. With these connections, companies can reduce delivery times and lower transportation costs. Moreover, Gdansk is the only Polish port that services the largest container ships in the world.

Key Connections and modern infrastructure

Recent years had been full of significant investments in the development of the port. One of the port’s greatest assets is its connections to major transport routes – both maritime and land-based. New terminals, the modernization of existing ones, and the construction of road and rail infrastructure have greatly increased the port’s capacity. All of this makes the Port of Gdansk an alternative to Western European ports such as Rotterdam and Hamburg. This is particularly relevant in light of the growing international trade, especially concerning the transport of goods from China as part of the New Silk Road.

Record Cargo Handling Results

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in cargo handling. The Port of Gdansk in 2023 has become one of the largest ports in Europe due to its continuous development. In 2021, the port handled 53.2 million tons, in 2022 it reached 68.2 million tons, and in 2023, it achieved an impressive figure of 81 million tons. These figures perfectly illustrate the dynamic growth of the Port of Gdansk and its crucial importance for trade in Central and Eastern Europe.

The Port of Gdansk as a gateway to Asia

The rise in trade with Asian countries, especially China, only strengthens Gdansk’s position on the logistics map of Europe. Major Asian ports, such as Singapore and Shanghai, are regularly connected to Gdańsk, making it a key hub in trade between continents. As a deep-water port, it services the largest container ships in the world, enabling efficient transportation of goods between Asia and Europe. It facilitates the transport of goods as part of the New Silk Road, which connects China with Europe, allowing for quick transfer of cargo by sea and land.

Geopolitical situation

Geopolitical events, such as the war in Ukraine, have significantly impacted the position of the Port of Gdansk. The change in trade routes and the embargo on Russian goods have led this port to take on some of the tasks previously performed by Russian ports, further increasing its significance on the international stage.

Increased demand for energy resources

The rising demand for energy resources has significantly influenced the development of the port. Investments such as the construction of a bulk terminal and the expansion of DCT have enabled efficient handling and storage of raw materials like coal, oil, and gas. Moreover, changes in Europe’s energy policy aimed at diversifying sources and reducing dependence on unstable regions have made the Port of Gdansk a safe and strategic port in the context of energy.
